The border and the shading stitches are both made with Thred's feather ribbon feature.  To see a lesson on feather fill, click here.

This version of the same flower is a good illustration of what not to do when you use feather fill.  To see what I mean, download the THR file, open it in Thred,  and move a few form points on the petals. I don't recommend this design.
